Let me tell you how I found this album.

I host a hip hop show on college radio. It’s called “Hold Up.” I used to host a show called “Third Coast Classics”, which was a strictly Southern Rap show. 3CC actually had a pretty decent following (what up, Greg from Pittsburgh?) but I felt strange about defining the show as a THIRD COAST ONLY type of deal. I mean, who am I, anyway?

So anyway, to find music for my show, I typed “South” into my iTunes. This was one of the albums that came up. I played like 3 seconds of each track, and thought number 4 – “Woo Yah Summer Jam” – was the best for my show. Good time party lyrics, throwaway Michael Jackson interpolation, idiosyncratic gruffle-man Cheeky Blakk verse (“did she just say ‘trippin on Alezé‘ or ‘LSA‘?” I hope my listeners asked themselves.)

But then the homey walkmasterflex tweeter’d me, asking if I could send him the file of “Woo Yah Summer Jam.” I proceeded to do just that, uploading it to some supermagicfileshare.cum and passing it along.

In the process of that, though, I realized: Shit dude, this is a pretty good album.

I mean seriously, have yall ever heard this album? It’s 7 solid tracks, each one different from the other. The production is pretty tight, and the lyrics are nice. One of them is on some weird “man I wish my friends didn’t smoke so much weed” shit, which is exactly what I like to hear. Where the hell did this album come from?

Here’s the info I quickly found about the album at discogs (discogs itself a figment of my distantish past. Legendary Bentwave host Miss Eleanor once told me, a novice longhaired goofball D.J.Wanna.B at the time, “yo, use discogs…it’s a lot better than Wikipedia.”):

It came out in 1996, as a cassette, released by Adversity Records. It was produced by Champagne, Playa, and Eddie Logan. Mixed by Matt Buros. This information was provided by discogs contributor Cube4Life, straight outta Lappeenranta, Finland.

Cool. But wait, where the hell did I get it from? I mean, that’s what I really care about here. I have this album, it’s great, I know the details of the original release, but I have no idea HOW I ACQUIRED IT.

Here’s what I do know: The files were created on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 1:19:42 AM EST. Unfortunately, it looks like I deleted the original zip file (assuming I got it from a zip file (I probably did.))

My first instinct was to check Twankle and Glisten. I used to rape that site for rapidshare albums, man. I’d download several files at a time, unzip ‘em, put em into iTunes, and maybe listen to a couple tracks to see what I think. But rarely did I listen to the whole thing. Fits the profile perfectly, right? Surely that’s where I got this one from. Nope. Nowhere to be found.

Another thing I did: just typed “South Warning” + “They said we couldn’t do it” into google. The first site that came up? Some message board – rapvault.net – with somebody offering the album up for download. HERE WE GO, I thought. This must have been where I got it from. Nope, looks like the user who started the thread (realybe from Anyksciai, Lithuania) didn’t join the site until July 2009.

Old(ish) school Cocaine Blunts message bored? Nope. Bust The Facts? No, didn’t think so. Where the hell did I find this album in 2008? The earliest I can find it on the internet is July 2009. Can anybody help me?

I’m proud that I’ve owned this album since 2008. It looks like I have had it longer than anyone else on the web. That makes me an OG, right? At any rate, this album is worth listening to. And by “listening to” I mean downloading. Download it, unzip it, upload it, forget about it, search for something arbitrary, find it, jam it, question it all.
